While we are in the midst of a global psychedelic research renaissance, it’s important to know that we are still in the research phase for many of these medicines. Though many studies have produced positive results, these results have not yet led to FDA approval for traditional psychedelics. Currently, Ketamine is the only drug with psychedelic effects approved by the FDA to treat a mental health condition. MDMA is in phase 3 clinical trials and is expected to be approved in a few years. Psilocybin is potentially poised to be decriminalized much like cannabis, but is not legal anywhere in the United States at this time. Other substances like LSD are much farther from legalization due to stigma. For those considering using psychedelics as medicine, please inform yourself. The Michael Pollan talk here is a great place to start. Also, please turn to the scientific research. Here is a link to the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) catalogue of psychedelic research.
Michael Pollan wrote the premier modern book on psychedelics titled, "How To Change Your Mind.” This book is an experience of immersive journalism that is an excellent way to educate yourself on psychedelics. MDMA
An organization called the Multidisciplinary Association of Psychedelic Studies (MAPS) is on a mission to achieve FDA approval for MDMA to treat PTSD. The research is sound and the FDA is cooperating by assigning MDMA “breakthrough” status. Below is a link to the 3 MDMA trials facilitated by MAPS. The video is a TED Talk given by MAPS’ founder, Rick Doblin.
